RING ROAD UPGRADE

Phase two of Island Parkway upgrades set to start next week at McArthur Island

KAMLOOPS — The second phase of an upgrade to the Island Parkway – also known as the ring road around McArthur Island Park – is starting next week.

The $350,000 project kicks off the week of March 22 and is expected to be finished sometime in mid-April. Improvements will be made to a section of the roadway starting at the 12th Avenue entrance to Mac Island and go all the way to the KYSA Clubhouse. The project will also include a wider and smoother pathway for pedestrians around that section of the park.

“There isn’t enough width to have that separated path along the roadway as we did on the south side,” Jeff Putnam, Parks and Civic Facilities Manager for the City of Kamloops explains. “As it is now, it’s going to be a continuation of a nice three-metre path with the roadway. Both the path and the road will be completely reconstructed, so it’s going to be much more accessible. Obviously, it’s very pitted and in rough shape right now. It’s about 20 years old, so it’ll be much nicer for the users.”:

The upgrades will affect traffic flow around the island for pedestrians and motorists. However, those disruptions will only last as long as crews are on-site each day, and won’t affect the COVID-19 vaccination clinic taking place at the McArthur Island Sports Centre.

“During construction, we’re going to redirect traffic down the service road in the middle, so we don’t expect any issues. The only thing I’ll suggest is please, please watch for pedestrians. They’ll be all over the place this year, just like they were last summer.”
