KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is reminding residents of an environmentally friendly way to commemorate a loved one – with its tree memorial program.

Parks and Civic Facilities Manager Jeff Putnam says the memorial bench side of the program has proven so popular the City is running out of prime locations for benches. However, there are plenty of spots available to start growing memorial trees throughout city parks.

Putnam says they’ve been wanting to boost urban forestry within the city, and figures the memorial option is a win-win.

“First of all its quite affordable. Memorial benches are almost $3,000, and a memorial tree like the one behind me here is $1,000, and that includes a nice little mounted brass plaque and of course the city crews will come and plant it and do the ongoing maintenance, provide irrigation and that type of thing.”

Putnam says trees can be purchased by people who want to remember a loved one, commemorate a big occasion, or promote their organization or non-profit by adding to the green landscape.

“Best way to do it is to call our call centre at Civic Operations 250-828-3461, and they’ll write down what you’re looking for and get you in contact with Joe in our parks department, and he will help you select a tree and a location.”
