ROTHENBURGER: Pity Harry and Meghan; all they want is their cake and to eat it too

KAMLOOPS — THE QUEEN IS NOT AMUSED. She is “saddened” by the challenges faced by Meghan and Harry as outlined in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in the U.K. a day after it was seen here.

She has a right to be sad — the prince and his wife have thoroughly trashed the Royal family as uncaring racists.

I must be the only one on the planet who couldn’t be bothered to listen to two hours of softball questions from Winfrey, and the self-serving answers, but I’m catching up.

Meghan told Winfrey she had, at one point, felt suicidal, and that somebody in the Royals had wondered aloud what colour baby Archie’s skin would be. She further stated that the Royals refused to help her out when she mentioned her depression.

Certainly, such claims can’t be ignored. As the Queen says, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

That phrase “some recollections may vary” hints that there’s another side to the story. Nevertheless, while it’s tempting to dismiss the interview as whining from two people who haven’t been getting their way, there will, no doubt, be some soul-searching in Buckingham Palace.

One might be more sympathetic, though, if the most explosive parts of the interview weren’t within the context of complaints about Archie not being given a Royal title, who made whom cry over flower girls’ dresses, having to curtsy to the Queen and not having someone else pay for security.

Then there’s Meghan’s plea for a more “authentic” life as she and Harry enjoy their $14.6 million, 14,500 square foot mansion, complete with 16 bathrooms, swimming pool, rescue chickens and a tennis court next door to Winfrey, Tom Cruise and Ellen Degeneres.

It all sounds a little like a spoiled couple of privilege wanting to have their cake and eat it too.
