KAMLOOPS — A February report highlighted how B.C. non-profit organizations are handling the burden of COVID-19.

Unraveling: Non-profits, COVID-19, and the Fabric of BC Communities – a report from Vantage Point, the Vancouver Foundation, and the Victoria Foundation with data from 930 non-profits – stated that 48 per cent of B.C. organizations anticipate closing their doors if the pandemic continues. Twenty per cent say it would be within the next year. Meanwhile, 71 per cent are expecting a budget shortfall in 2021.

Groups most concerned about having to shut down are arts and culture, sports and recreation, small organizations, and those serving racialized people.

In Kamloops, non-profits’ ability to thrive in the pandemic has varied.

Keep Kamloops has attempted to continue its campaign to support non-profits in arts, recreation, and heritage. It now features Kamloops Sports Council and the Kamloops Arts Council. Its campaign on the Kamloops Heritage Railway began March 8.

“The publicity we’ve received [through Keep Kamloops] has been outstanding,” Kamloops Sports Council Executive Director Duncan Olthuis said. “[We’ve] always been in the background of many events; it’s great to have our organization out in the public eye.”

Because events have been cancelled due to provincial health restrictions, the Sports Council hasn’t had incoming revenue since March 2020, yet expenses continue. They are working on a registration module, YKA Now, to help support amateur sports organizations.
