Boogie the Bridge organizers plan for another COVID-safe event in 2021

KAMLOOPS — About a year ago, the annual run-up to Boogie the Bridge had just begun. A week later, the COVID-19 pandemic shrouded the future of the 2020 event in uncertainty.

“It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone — Boogie included,” Founder Jo Berry tells CFJC Today.

The Boogie the Bridge event Kamloops is accustomed to was eventually cancelled. In its place, folks were asked to take part in Eight Days of Boogie, where they go out and complete their chosen distance on their own.

“We really encourage everyone to do that again, this year,” Berry says. “The Eight Days of Boogie will be happening April 18th to the 25th.”

Registration for Boogie the Bridge is open now. All of the funds raised through registration for the event have been pledged to Western Canada Theatre’s (WCT) new pilot program, which is focused on amplifying the voices of Indigenous youth.

“We’ve been working to create the program with an Indigenous educator in the community,” James MacDonald, Artistic Director with WCT explains. “Our next step will be getting in contact with Tk’emlups te Secwepemc and other Indigenous schools in the region.”

For Artistic Director James MacDonald, the values of Western Canada Theatre and Boogie the Bridge align around community.

“We are all about giving our community the opportunity to gather in safety and comfort and joy and happiness,” MacDonald says. “That’s the same thing Boogie is doing.”

2021 might not be the year the full-fledged Boogie the Bridge experience comes back to Kamloops. However, when that time comes, Jo Berry says she and the rest of the Boogie the Bridge organizers will be ready.

“When it’s safe and we can have three or four thousand people together, it’s just going to be a lovely love-fest of community and connection,” Berry says. “I love Kamloops, and our team does. I can’t even… it’s going be amazing.”
