Province averages 475 new cases of COVID-19 per day over the weekend; just 22 per day in Interior

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. government is reporting 1,428 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days, or an average of 475 per day.

The numbers are included in a prepared statement from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry released Monday (Feb. 22).

Only 67 of the new cases were found in Interior Health, or just over 22 per day.

The 1,428 new cases bring the provincial total to 77,263, spread out as follows:

  • 17,845 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 358)
  • 45,553 — Fraser Health (up by 705)
  • 2,167 — Island Health (up by 100)
  • 7,198 — Interior Health (up by 67)
  • 4,351 — Northern Health (up by 99)
  • 155 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry notes there are 4,560 active cases of the virus in B.C. Monday, up by 74 from Friday. There are 223 people in hospital with 66 in critical care.

Within Interior Health, there are 624 active cases of COVID-19, a decrease of 81 from Friday. Nineteen people remain hospitalized with nine in critical care.

There were eight more deaths over the past three days, raising the provincial death toll from COVID-19 to 1,335. Two of the eight deaths occurred in Interior Health, bringing the regional death toll to 96.

There are 101 cases of COVID-19 variants in B.C. — 81 of B.1.1.7 (originated in U.K.), 20 of B.1.31 (originated in South Africa) and two of B.1.525 (originated in Nigeria).

A total of 71,313 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, 218,726 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 55,057 second doses.
