Busy Friday night for Kamloops emergency crews

KAMLOOPS – Fire crews and other emergency responders were hopping overnight dealing with several incidents.

Eastbound lanes on the Trans Canada Highway in Kamloops were closed for several hours overnight while crews dealt with the results of an accident involving a semi-trailer unit.

RCMP say the truck lost control and flipped on its side, tearing the trailer open. Debris was spread over four lanes. The two occupants of the truck were thrown from the vehicle but survived. They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, however police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be involved.

KFR officials say the accident happened just after 9:30 last night on a sweeping curve just above the off ramp to Columbia Street in Aberdeen. The accident obliterated the no-post guard rail separating the highway from the off ramp.

At exactly the same time, crews were called to a structure on Westerdale Drive where crews had been earlier in the day dealing with a residential fire. It turned out a neighbour had called it in, thinking the blaze might have restarted, but it turned out to be a gas fireplace emitting steam in the cold weather.

And to make it an all Sahali-Aberdeen evening, crews put out a blaze in a big industrial dumpster at the shopping center at 1180 Columbia Street West. The dumpster was close to the building, where renovations were being made. Crews made quick work of the blaze, but it could have been a lot worse.
