Five more COVID-19 cases crop up from long-stable Gemstone Care Centre outbreak

KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops COVID-19 outbreak that had been winding down has shown concerning signs of more spread.

In a news release Friday (Feb. 12), Interior Health (IH) says there are 31 cases of the virus now associated with an outbreak at Gemstone Care Centre in Brocklehurst. That constitutes five additional cases from the reported total Thursday.

IH says eight of the cases are active. It notes the cases are divided between 23 residents and eight staff. Two deaths are connected to the Gemstone outbreak.

The outbreak at the Westsyde Care Residence has also grown from 27 cases to 29 Friday. There are 16 residents and 13 staff who have tested positive for COVID-19, and there is one death associated with the outbreak.

For the two other Kamloops outbreaks, there has been no new growth.

Interior Health says the outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital remains at 105 cases, with 32 now considered active, down from 40 Thursday.

And an outbreak at Highridge Home and Singh House is still at nine cases, with seven still active.
