Former Kamloops teacher looking for ‘Kindest Class in Canada’

KAMLOOPS — A former Kamloops educator and now clinical counsellor has created a nationwide contest in search of the ‘Kindest Class in Canada.’

Cole Levitt, who used to be an elementary teacher in the district and now operates Aligned Kamloops Counselling & Consulting, launched the month-long contest at the start of February and hopes it brings out the best in students during an otherwise difficult time amid a global pandemic.

Levitt says teachers and students report acts of kindess through the online platform Depths of Comfort, and one class from grades one to seven with the most acts wins a pizza party from Pizza Hut.

“The ‘Kindness Class in Canada’ came from the idea that social and emotional wellness, and school connectedness, are the most important part of school, and learning comes from that foundation,” said Levitt. “So we wanted to celebrate the kids out there doing great things across our country. The kids that are going above and beyond to make their classrooms and their communities that much better by engaging in really kind acts.”

In addition to a pizza party to the winners of each grade, there will be weekly gift card giveaways from Pizza Hut and weekly shout-out to students being kind.

“If I give you a compliment and I share that compliment with you that lands on your [Depths of Comfort] platform, that’s counted as a kind act,” noted Levitt. “If I share an act of kindness that I saw from my fellow classmate on the field with my teacher, that’s counted. Every time I accomplish an activity that’s a kind activity on my kindness quest, that’s counted. So we’re looking for the number of kind activities, but we’re also looking for the depth of kindness.”

A teacher can sign up their classroom to participate at Depths of Comfort website.
