Spread the Local Love campaign simultaneously supports Kamloops Food Bank, small businesses

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Food Bank has been named as one of ten charitable organizations that will benefit from a new online auction and shopping site sponsored by BCLC.

Spread the Local Love is a virtual fundraising event held for two weeks in February. The lottery corporation has already pre-purchased a number of items and gift cards from local businesses and made them available for direct-buying or bidding on an online page. Money from the sale of those items will then be donated to participating non-profits.

Kamloops Food Bank Director of Resource Development Corra Gassner says the goal is to give businesses a revenue boost, and help non-profits.

“They’ve reached out to some of our local small businesses like Mittz Kitchen, Jardines Domaine. And if you’d like you can purchase an item outright, and those funds go to the both the local business and to the Kamloops Food Bank. Or if you’d like you can bid on some of the silent auction items.”

After seeing the financial impact COVID-19 has had on many local businesses, the Kamloops Food Bank says it was eager to collaborate on the event. Money raised will help feed local students who access the Starfish Backpack Program.

“Right now we have 130 backpacks going to 14 different schools. So through these funds we’re able to make sure we’re getting enough breakfasts, lunches and dinners for that weekend so that come Monday morning kids are fed and prepared to learn.”

Spread the Local Love is online now until February 15. The auction page can be accessed through this link, and for more information, go to the Kamloops Food Bank website.
