Sixteen more COVID-19 deaths, 414 new cases recorded in B.C.

VICTORIA — The COVID-19 pandemic has torn another deadly swath through B.C. Wednesday.

In a prepared statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says 16 more people died of the virus throughout the province.

Henry announced 414 new cases of COVID-19, including 63 within Interior Health.

The new cases lift the province’s overall case count to 68,780, spread out as follows:

  • 15,836 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 108)
  • 41,161 — Fraser Health (up by 182)
  • 1,727 — Island Health (up by 26)
  • 6,459 — Interior Health (up by 63)
  • 3,558 — Northern Health (up by 34)
  • 144 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

There are 4,426 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Wednesday, down about 100 from Tuesday. The active cases include 278 patients in hospital and 80 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 992 active cases, a decrease of 22 from Tuesday. There are 49 people in hospital with 20 in critical care.

The 16 additional deaths raise B.C.’s death toll to 1,234. None of the deaths took place in Interior Health, where the death toll remains at 75.

There are 7,049 under active public health monitoring due to direct exposure to COVID-19.

The number of people considered fully recovered from the virus has reached 61,643, or 90 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry says 142,146 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., including 6,417 second doses.
