SOUND OFF: How are we doing?

If you thought 2021 might be better than 2020, you might want to take a look at things as we head into the second month of the year.

It’s the first of February. The COVID-19 pandemic is not going away, in fact with all the variants, it might be worsening.

Canada has now recorded more than 20,000 deaths. Several provinces are dealing with increases in cases. In the U.S., January was the deadliest pandemic month yet with more than 95,000 deaths.

In the U.S. and Canada, they can’t roll out the vaccine fast enough. We can’t travel out of the country, and soon we may not be able to travel out between provinces.

The job market continues to struggle. Toxic workplaces abound, systemic racism is at the top of our discussions, extremists are wreaking havoc, we are spending trillions of dollars trying to keep the economy afloat, which will affect us for generations to come.

Businesses are struggling to serve customers amid severe, but necessary restrictions, our hospital has an outbreak that has many wondering about whether they should go to the ER if they are ill.

And yet, despite all these issues, many have not got the message.

Police issued thousands of dollars in fines at the coast over the weekend to partiers who think they are invincible, people get abusive when asked to wear their mask, extremists in the U.S. still believe the U.S. election was rigged, and despite all the evidence, the Republicans are unlikely to convict Donald Trump, and in fact, are rallying around him.

Is there good news?

Well, maybe tomorrow the Groundhog will have some for us.

And as long as the sun comes up, there’s always hope.

And there is always a silver lining.

Always.

These days, we just have to look a little harder to find it.
