Community cautioned after cougar spotted near Summit Elementary

KAMLOOPS — Residents in the Upper and Lower Sahali areas are being cautioned about a cougar recently spotted in the area.

Summit Elementary School sent an email to parents and guardians Sunday (Jan. 31), noting that a cougar was seen in the green space close to the school Sunday morning.

Principal Justin de Vries says the conservation officer team told school administrators that the cat has already moved on, but due to fresh deer tracks in the area it may stick around for a few days. De Vries goes on to say conservation told him the cougar does not pose a direct risk to the school or students, however taking extra precautions is recommended.

For the next week students and staff are asked to not use the pathways that cut through the green spaces around the school, and to instead only walk on the streets. Students under the age of nine are asked to not walk home by themselves.
