KAMLOOPS — Interior Health (IH) says the COVID-19 outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) has grown by 14 from Tuesday to Wednesday (Jan. 27).

In a Zoom conference with reporters Wednesday, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Albert de Villiers reported 66 total cases of COVID-19 from the RIH outbreak, 64 of them still active.

De Villiers reported 43 cases among staff and 23 among patients. The death toll from the RIH outbreak remains at one.

IH says the outbreak is still confined to 6 South, which is the surgical ward where it originated, and 6 North, which is the COVID-19 ward.

In response to the outbreak, de Villiers announced all new admissions to the hospital will be tested for COVID-19, regardless of where they will be admitted.

Meantime, the outbreak at Gemstone Care Centre in Brocklehurst has not grown. It remains at 23 active cases — 16 residents and seven staff — with two deaths.
