Police watchdog ends probe into death of Williams Lake man that followed judicial release
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says RCMP officers were not at fault for the death of a Williams Lake man earlier this month — in fact, they actively tried to prevent it.
On January 11, RCMP were called to a home in the 700-block of Midnight Drive for a suspicious person. Investigating officers found four people nearby. One of them was found to have outstanding warrants and was arrested.
Members learned that the man had recently made suicidal comments and recommended to Crown counsel that he remain in custody for his own safety.
On January 13, the man had a bail hearing. Crown opposed his release, but the court disagreed, releasing him on conditions.
