RCMP remind Kamloops drivers to slow down in school zones, watch for icy patches

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say, with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark recently, the importance of being cautious around school zones is heightened.

In a release, Cpl. Dana Napier says ice and snow thaw during the day and freeze overnight, causing icy patches to grow.

Napier says when drivers don’t adhere to posted speeds in school zones, they could hit those icy patches and cause a danger to pedestrians and other motorists.

Of particular concern is Westsyde Road, long an area that entices motorists to drive faster than they should. Napier says despite a 60 km/h speed limit, Westsyde Road has several crosswalks and a school zone that should see drivers slowing down considerably.

RCMP have some tips for those walking or driving near school zones:

Drivers:

  • When dropping off your children in school zones, allow them time to exit the vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child to cross the street mid-block.
  • If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may be yielding to a pedestrian, so proceed with caution and be prepared to stop.
  • Watch for school buses. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.

Pedestrians:

  • Stay alert until you have safely reached the other side of the road, cars can come from all directions.
  • Stay ‘unplugged’ and leave gadgets in backpacks when walking or cycling, this will allow you to focus on the road, see, hear, and respond safely.
  • Wear high visibility clothing.
