Province finds 509 new cases of COVID-19; Interior Health surpasses 5,000 total cases

VICTORIA — Interior Health has surpassed the 5,000 mark for COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

According to new numbers released by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. saw 509 new cases Friday (Jan. 15), including 86 within Interior Health. That pushes the IH total to 5,056.

Province-wide, there have been 60,117 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 13,728 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 101)
  • 37,258 — Fraser Health (up by 260)
  • 1,220 — Island Health (up by 13)
  • 5,056 — Interior Health (up by 86)
  • 2,745 — Northern Health (up by 49)
  • 115 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 4,604 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, down 20 from Thursday. Three-hundred forty-nine people are hospitalized, with 68 in intensive care.

Nine more people have died from the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,047.

As of Friday, there are 7,132 people under active public health monitoring because they have been in contact with identified COVID-19 cases.

A total of 53,115 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 88 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says the number of people who have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine has reached 75,914.
