BC Wildlife Park caring for thin lynx spotted in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Yet another lynx is recovering at the Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre after wandering around a Kamloops neighbourhood.

The female lynx was brought to the BC Wildlife Park by conservation officers.

This is the second lynx to arrive at the centre since October. The first, a male lynx that had been acting abnormally, was previously released back to the wild after receiving treatment.

This lynx appears to be in good health, but is considered skinny.

“Nothing outwardly that we can see going on with this lynx, which is good news, but it is very thin,” said Animal Care Manager Tracy Reynolds. “I suspect it’s hungry, obviously. So, we’re just going to keep it and hold it for a bit, we’ve taken some blood just to make sure we’re not missing anything that we just can’t see going on on the outside.”

If the lynx is found to be healthy, she will be kept for a few more weeks and then released. Reynolds says it is odd to have more than one lynx brought in for treatment in the span of a year.

“I have no idea why we’ve had two separate lynx on the North Shore. There’s many reasons that it could be. It could be that the food abundance for them is lower this year. It could be that there are more lynx and so they’re just spreading out more. There could be so many different things so it’s hard to say.”
