B.C. records 536 cases of COVID-19, including 115 within Interior Health

VICTORIA — The COVID-19 surge within Interior Health is continuing unabated, while case counts in the rest of the province decrease.

In a news conference Thursday (Jan. 14), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 536 new cases of the virus, including 115 in Interior Health.

The new cases bring the province-wide COVID-19 total to 59,608 since the pandemic began, spread through B.C. thusly:

  • 13,627 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 102)
  • 36,998 — Fraser Health (up by 253)
  • 1,207 — Island Health (up by 21)
  • 4,970 — Interior Health (up by 115)
  • 2,696 — Northern Health (up by 45)
  • 115 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 4,624 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Thursday, down nearly 200 from Wednesday, with 362 people in hospital including 74 in critical and intensive care.

While the active case load is on the decline in the province at large, it is up to 948 within Interior Health, with 38 patients hospitalized including 10 in critical care.

Seven more people have died of the virus, bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,038.

Henry said there are at least 7,303 people under active public health monitoring because they have come into direct contact with people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

A total of 52,605 are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 88 per cent of all cases.

Meantime, Henry noted 69,746 people have received their initial doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
