Kamloops Code Blue says province will review effluent from Ajax site

Dec 21, 2020 | 12:12 PM

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops environmental groups are claiming victory after their efforts to increase scrutiny on the Ajax mine site proved fruitful.

In a news release, Kamloops Code Blue — which is comprised of several environmental groups — says the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has confirmed it will review a permit “that authorizes untreated effluent from the Ajax Mine to be discharged into the Peterson Creek watershed.”

A further note from the ministry says the review will include consultation with Indigenous nations, local governments and stewardship organizations.

The groups had requested the review in October. They say unmonitored effluent from the mine site has been leaching into the groundwater that eventually collects in Peterson Creek for more than 30 years.
