Trans Mountain ends contract with company building North Thompson, Edmonton expansion portions

EDMONTON — Trans Mountain has terminated the contract with the company that is building the North Thompson portion of its expansion project.

In an email, a spokesperson says the pipeline has ended its contract with SA Energy Group for Spreads 1 and 4B. Spread 1 is in the greater Edmonton area and Spread 4B runs through the North Thompson valley.

Trans Mountain says it will sign up “alternative construction contractors” for both spreads in the coming weeks.

SA Energy was also the contractor building Spread 6 of the expansion through the Fraser Valley. There was no word about the status of that contract.

In a 2018 post to the Trans Mountain website introducing SA Energy, Trans Mountain praised the contractor as a company that has “substantial experience with large diameter pipeline construction” whose highest priorities are “safety, quality, environmental protection and stakeholder engagement.”

The spokesperson would not disclose why the contract was terminated but, in an email to CFJC Today, said, “Trans Mountain is committed to a strong culture of safety above all else and insist that our Project contractors and subcontractors are equally committed.”

Earlier this week, Trans Mountain announced it is pausing construction for more than two weeks to address a series of safety concerns.
