Kamloops Fire Rescue praises quick actions for snuffing Valleyview fire

Dec 17, 2020 | 4:45 PM

KAMLOOPS — Shortly before 11:00 am, Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were called to Surge-Med in Valleyview after they received a call of a structure fire at the business.

When crews arrived on scene, they found that the occupants of the business had already extinguished a small fire, then safely exited the building.

“What had happened was it was just a battery that had exploded inside and created a little bit of smoke,” Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Cail explains. “BC Ambulance also attended and dealt with one patient that reportedly had some smoke inhalation from [the explosion]. Our crews stayed on scene just to ventilate the building, just to make sure the smoke was blown out of the building for occupants to re-enter.”

Cail says incidents like this can serve as a good reminder for everyone to know where the nearest fire extinguisher is, and how to use it.

“We ask [businesses] that they’re mounted and they’re in a certain location so that when you do hit the panic button and your nerves are going, blood pressure is going, you’re there, and you know where [the fire extinguisher] is and you can grab it right away.”
