B.C. recorded 2,146 new COVID-19 cases over three days, 49 more deaths

VANCOUVER — The first doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 have arrived in B.C.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said she was overjoyed at the news that the vaccine arrived in the Lower Mainland late Sunday (Dec. 13) night.

The first to receive the vaccine will be healthcare workers and long-term care residents in the Lower Mainland.

Meantime, Henry reported 2,146 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days – 698 on Saturday, 689 on Sunday and 759 on Monday. A total of 250 of those cases were found within Interior Health.

The new cases bring B.C.’s case count up to 42,943, spread through the province as follows:

  • 10,536 — Vancouver Coastal (up 300)
  • 27,341 — Fraser Health (up by 1,474)
  • 787 — Island Health (up by 29)
  • 2,851 — Interior Health (up by 250)
  • 1,331 — Northern Health (up by 91)
  • 99 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 2)

For the first time, the active case count in B.C. has surpassed 10,000. Henry said there were 10,039 active cases Monday, with 359 patients in hospital including 87 in critical care.

Forty-nine more people have died of COVID-19 throughout B.C. lifting the province’s death toll to 647.

There are 11,177 people under active public health monitoring because they have been exposed to confirmed cases of the virus.

A total of 31,207 people have been declared fully recovered from COVID-19, of 73 per cent of all recorded cases.
