Armed suspect arrested after dangerous dash from police near Williams Lake

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — An RCMP tussle Friday (Dec. 11) with a dangerous driver resulted in a high-risk arrest and a gun being seized.

The saga began Friday morning at about 11:30 a.m. when a black Nissan Altima fled from a Quesnel RCMP officer during a traffic stop.

The car was tracked to a residential area north of Williams Lake. Officers were able to position their vehicles in front of the car and deploy a spike belt an effort to disable it.

RCMP say the suspect accelerated toward an officer, and while the officer got out of harm’s way, the suspect vehicle had a tire deflated by the belt. It was followed to another spot where another tire was punctured by a spike belt.

Even with two tires down, the suspect kept driving and when officers boxed him in again, he tried to flee on foot. Officers took him in with what they term a “high risk arrest”.

Investigators believe the man was under the influence of drugs at the time.

Prince George resident Hayden Lee Alwood, 26, has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, assault with a weapon, two counts of assaulting a police officer, mischief to property, obstruction and failing to comply with an undertaking. His next court appearance is set for Dec. 23.

“The removal of firearms in the possession of violent offenders remain a priority of Williams Lake RCMP,” said Insp. Jeff Pelley in a news release. “Despite not knowing this suspect was armed, the criminal code offences initially committed by this offender resulted in the removal of weapons from the street inclusive of a suspected impaired driver. There was a great potential given this offender’s demonstrated disregard for police and public safety.”

Anyone who knows anything further about the incident or the driving behaviour of the Nissan Altima prior to the incident is asked to call Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
