KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has told hotel and motel owners along Columbia Street West to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to ensuring the safety of the neighbourhood.

Nine properties along Columbia Street West were designated nuisance properties on October 22, according to a Bylaw Services and Crime Prevention report to the City’s Community Services Committee. The Acadian Inn on the eastern edge of downtown was also given the nuisance property designation.

Being declared a nuisance property compels the owner to pay for the costs of excess nuisance calls stemming from that property.

The Columbia Street West area was the scene of increased police activity earlier in the fall due to disturbances and incidents of violence. The issue caused School District 73 to step up security around nearby Beattie Elementary School.

The report notes property owners met with City of Kamloops officials on November 16, pledging to clean up their properties and ensure “safety for residents in the area.”

  • Desert Inn (755/765 Columbia Street West)
  • Knights Inn (625 Columbia Street West)
