Murray United Church project $15k away from fundraising goal

MERRITT, B.C. — A church group raising money to rebuild the Murray United Church in Merritt has a new fundraising challenge.

The historic church burned to the ground nearly two years ago, the result of arson. Since then, Trinity United Church in Merritt has gotten involved in raising funds for a new building.

In October, the group successfully raised enough money to break ground on the project. Now, with only $15,000 left in its overall goal, the group is putting out the call for more donations.

“We had one of our previous donors approach us and be willing to match our final $15,000,” said fundraising liaison Christina Miller. “$7,500 is what he’s going to match if the community can come up and raise the first $7,500. So, we were very thankful and took it on as a challenge, and the community seems to be pouring stuff in, so we’re hopeful.”

The deadline for this challenge is January 11, two years from the day the original church building burned down.

The $180,000 goal should allow for the church to be completely rebuilt at its former location.

“Extra costs always come in at the end, and so we’re hopeful that what we budgeted will be what we need. We’re just so thankful that the community is still believing in our project. It’s unbelievable and it’s such a wonderful time of year to do that.”
