Kamloops’ Gainey looks back on his role in Ovechkin’s goal voted greatest ever

KAMLOOPS — It’s simply referred to as ‘The Goal.’ Fourteen years ago, The Great Eight, Alexander Ovechkin, scored what many considered the greatest goal ever. This week, fans voted the goal — scored in January 2006 against the Phoenix Coyotes — as the best they’ve ever seen.

There is a Kamloops connection to that goal./ Former Blazers and current Storm head coach Steve Gainey had a brief stint in the NHL, playing 33 games, and he was on the ice when Ovie scored the incredible goal behind his back.
