According to a news release, City Transportation Manager Purvez Irani says the rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) have been installed at crosswalks on Tranquille Road between Knox and Palm Streets and on Summit Drive at the intersection with Robson Drive.

The systems are pedestrian-activated and flash brightly when pedestrians are using the crosswalks at those locations.

Irani says the City is also installing lead pedestrian intervals (LPIs) at crosswalks in the downtown core. The change will give pedestrians a head start at signalled intersections while vehicle signals stay on red for a few seconds longer.

The shorter days put pedestrian safety into sharper focus. ICBC says nearly half of all pedestrian-involved collisions take place between October and January when daylight hours are shortest.
