KGHM-Ajax opens new Kamloops office

KAMLOOPS — There is another indication today that the KGHM-Ajax project is rising from the grave.

The project ownership is divided between Polish mining giant KGHM Polska Miedz with 80 per cent and Vancouver-based Abacus Mining and Exploration with the remaining 20 per cent.

Abacus issued a news release Thursday (Dec. 3) stating that KGHM has now set up a new office in Kamloops.

In September, the project hired a new superintendent and began connecting with area First Nations and municipal governments.

The company would like to set up a large open-pit copper-gold mine just south of the Kamloops neighbourhood of Aberdeen.

A lengthy environmental assessment process beginning in 2011 resulted in the first iteration of the project being rejected by the provincial and federal governments in 2017. The City of Kamloops and Tk’emlups te Secwepemc had both expressed opposition.

In the news release, Abacus says KGHM has worked with it to continue advancing the project, “including evaluating various strategies geared toward potentially resubmitting the environmental application.”
