Snow, wind will make travel dicey in the B.C. Interior Friday

KAMLOOPS — Snowfall will make its return to the Kamloops area beginning this afternoon.

Environment Canada’s Armel Castellan says flurries are forecast for Kamloops today, and we may see a few centimetres accumulating Friday.

“Really, the main event is on Friday,” Castellan told CFJC Today. “Particularly in the morning, before the snow levels rise to about 700 metres, we could see two-to-four centimetres in Kamloops.”

Castellan says the bigger headache will come to those who are planning to hit the highways.

“Hope-to-Merritt, we could see some accumulations already this evening in the way of two centimetres and then for the overnight period, maybe 10 more centimetres and then another five-to-10 (centimetres Friday),” he said. “When we get to Merritt-to-Kamloops, it’s more like five centimetres tonight and five tomorrow.”

Castellan adds strong winds will make travel dicey, especially at high elevations.

“This is going to be quite a windy patch, so blowing snow is going to be just as big of a concern to visibilities while driving as are the accumulations on the ground,” he said. “Definitely some tricky driving conditions ahead.”

It’s more reason not to travel, as Interior Health has advised residents to avoid travel to areas where COVID-19 case counts are surging right now.
