SD73 proposes fee on new development to pay for new Kamloops school sites

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops-Thompson School District Board of Education is asking residents to weigh in on a proposal to help fund new school sites in Kamloops.

Under the proposal, developers of new residential properties in Kamloops would be charged fees that would go toward acquiring land for new schools.

The fee would be known as a School Site Acquisition Charge (SSAC). The B.C. government has mandated school districts have SSACs in place in order to receive capital funding to acquire school properties.

The fee would only be charged on newly-developed residential properties, with the following rate structure:

• Multi-family (low density) — $259 per unit
• Multi-family (high density) — $201 per unit

SD73 believes it will need to build one new elementary school and one new secondary school in Aberdeen in the coming ten years, based on current growth projections.

If estimates hold, the SSAC could be collected on 8,766 units over the next decade. The board says acquisition of the two new school sites is projected to cost about $7.3 million.
