PETERS: Goodbye and good riddance

A LOT OF PEOPLE CONTACT US to complain that our columns and editorials are biased.

Of course, they are confusing columns with news reporting. Opinion pieces are meant to present opinions, supported by evidence.

But to appease those who want to hear more facts and fewer opinions, here is a column chock full of facts, with only a slight dash of opinion thrown in at the end.

Fact: Donald Trump routinely lies to the American people — so much so, that a prominent television news organization hired a reporter whose sole purpose is to fact-check the president.

That reporter, Daniel Dale, has had no lack of work on his beat, becoming somewhat of a journalistic star for his dogged efforts to bring forward the truth.

Fact: Donald Trump encouraged foreign leaders to help him find dirt on his political opponents.

Fact: 26 women have credibly accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct, dating back to the 1970s.

Not only that, Trump has a history of sexism, including a tape of a conversation speaking about women in such disgusting terms that we can’t run it on conventional television.

Fact: As part of the Donald Trump administration’s immigration policy, children were forcibly separated from their parents at the United States border and kept in cages.

It was partly meant as a deterrent to people who would try to find a new life and new opportunity in America, despite the promise of the Statue of Liberty.

Now, it has come to light that there is no system to reunite those children with their parents.

Fact: Whether or not Donald Trump is a racist, he has no problem being supported by racists and allowing racists free reign in the U.S.

In a clash between anti-racism demonstrators and alt-right bigots, Trump said there were good people on both sides.

When protestors called for racial justice, Trump told the white supremacist Proud Boys to “stand down and stand by.”

And now another fact: Donald Trump has claimed, without evidence, that the Democrats are committing fraud and trying to steal the election from him.

It’s far more likely that Trump committed slander than the Democrats committed fraud.

As the final votes are counted in the coming days, they will almost certainly give Joe Biden the presidency, even under the United States’ strange electoral college system.

And that will be goodbye to Donald Trump — and listen closely, here’s the opinion part — good riddance.
