Elk sightings prompt hunting moratorium on Tk’emlups te Secwepemc lands
TK’EMLUPS — For the first time in years, elk have been spotted within the territory of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (TteS). That has prompted TteS council to issue a moratorium on elk hunting.
In a notice posted the Tk’emlups website Friday (Nov. 6), the nation says it wants to encourage an increase in elk populations for future generations.
Elk were common in this region prior to European settlement but populations diminished greatly post-contact.
According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, there are about 72,000 North American elk in Canada. About 40,000 of those are in British Columbia, but most are either in the Kootenay or Peace regions.
