KAMLOOPS — This week, Nov. 1 to 7, is Canadian Down Syndrome Week, which celebrates the accomplishments of people with Down syndrome.

Dominique Baird is an advocate for people with diverse abilities. She is also an accomplished speaker, YMCA Peace Medal recipient and a familiar face at the Fairfield Inn and Suites where she works.

“I was born with Down syndrome and I am proud of that because I can do everything everybody else can, just in (my) special way,” Dominique said.

Dominique’s mother, Karen, is the vice president of the Thompson Nicola Ups and Downs Society. She says Kamloops has done a good job of creating opportunities for people of varying abilities.

“We have organizations like People in Motion, which are really at the forefront going out and helping,” she said. “Dom belongs to their youth outreach program and we get to go do speeches throughout the elementary schools, teaching the young children. We have a friend at the university, Dr. Nan Stevens that invites us to go for local talks. So, it’s just a great opportunity to bring awareness and focus on some of the different abilities that people with Down syndrome have.”
