KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University is holding its annual Day of Giving Thursday and Friday (Nov. 5 and 6).

The event, which would usually kick off with the TRU Foundation breakfast has been altered this year due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, organizers are hopeful the generosity of the community will shine through as the university seeks to raise $36,000.

“This is our fourth annual Day of Giving here at Thompson Rivers University,” said Director of Development Sarah Sandholm. “It’s a big push to get as much support for students as we can in just 36 hours.”

The money raised through the fundraiser will be turned into bursaries and scholarships to help students with such costs as tuition and housing.

Through TRU’s giving site, donors can choose where they want their money directed.

“So, they can give to the School of Trades and Technology, they can support nursing students, if they have an interest in supporting Indigenous programming, it’s really up to them there are multiple designations for their gift,” Sandholm said.

Progressive Rubber Industries chose to support the Trades Program.

“If we supported where we’d like to see students coming out of, there’s a chance we can get a lot of those students into our business,” said VP Manufacturing Jeff Winger. “We do have, on our estimating department, two of our three estimators came through the program here. So we have hired them in the past and we believe in Kamloops and believe in keeping those kids local.”

For students like Jackson Gardner, the Day of Giving shows how much the community is willing to invest in their futures.

“You have all the donors coming in and at the end of the day all the athletic programs, not just ours, at TRU kind of depend and revolve around external donations, combined with the amount of funding we receive from the University itself, so at the end of the day the Day of Giving and the people that contribute to that help us in a huge way,” Gardner said.

The TRU Foundation encourages people to contribute any amount they feel comfortable with.

“We’re asking for all types of supports,” Sandholm said, “so whatever people can give today and tomorrow, we’re hoping that they’ll come out in a big way to support students.”
