App helps victims of Kamloops auto theft track down suspect

LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — A smartphone app helped the victims of an auto theft in Kamloops track down their stolen vehicle earlier this week.

According to Logan Lake RCMP, the theft happened at about 6:30 Monday morning (Oct. 26) at a local hotel room. The suspect allegedly broke into a hotel room, stole vehicle keys and a cell phone, then used the keys to take a vehicle from the parking lot.

Using an app on another phone, the vehicle’s owners tracked the car to the Coquihalla Highway near the Logan Lake turnoff.

A local towing company came across the vehicle after it was involved in a minor crash, and the theft suspect called the tow company to get it going again.

Mounties arrived and arrested the suspect, recovering the vehicle and cell phone.

RCMP identify the suspect as 50-year-old Mark Daniel Clute of Kamloops. He will remain in custody until his November 9 court date.
