VAVENBY, B.C. — Canfor has increased its financial contribution to the community of Vavenby.

Canfor closed its sawmill in Vavenby in the summer of 2019. At the time, Canfor provided the community with $25,000 for infrastructure initiatives. The District of Clearwater received $200,000, prompting residents of Vavenby to advocate for more money.

“I did start it, about over a year ago, I wrote back and forth, I’ve had meetings with (Canfor),” said TNRD Area ‘A’ Director Carol Schaffer. “I’ve also had telephone conferences with them and I’ve written letters through the regional district. In the end there it was, $25,000, but they have increased it to $100,000 because the increase in the lumber market has been so great.”

Schaffer says she is now satisfied with the funding and thankful for it.

A portion of the money will be used to improve Vavenby’s fire hall, while most has been earmarked for a water treatment facility.

“$75,000 dollars is going to the water system, because we are going to have to put in a water filtration system,” Schaffer said. “Also, the new owners of Canfor have donated 1.6 acres to put a water filtration system on the land.”
