School District 73 uses reserves to balance budget

KAMLOOPS — School District 73 will take over 1.5 million dollars from its reserve fund to balance its budget over the next few months.

Board Chair Rhonda Kershaw, in a news release yesterday, said the budget has to balance, and using the money from reserves is a better option than cutting programs. At Monday’s meeting, the Board unanimously approved the move.

There was a significant shift this fall from in-class instruction to either distributed learning or home school options. Since funding levels for each of the options isn’t equal, the Board was facing a shortfall.

Superintendent Dr. Terry Sullivan says over the next several months, they expect students to return more to in-class instruction, so the schools will be staffed for students’ eventual return to in-class learning.
