VERNON, B.C. — A vehicle police have been looking for since a March assault incident has been seized and a thorough search has resulted in a significant drug seizure.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s Targeted Policing section seized a Jeep Grand Cherokee as part of an ongoing investigation. On March 24, 2020 at approximately 6:45 pm, a 47-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the 2000 block of 43rd Street in Vernon when he had a verbal altercation with the occupants of a white Jeep Cherokee. As the cyclist began to ride away, the driver of the Cherokee ran into him knocking him off his bike and to the ground. Two men exited the Cherokee and assaulted the cyclist.

Numerous investigative avenues were pursued, however, police were not able to identify the driver, or occupants responsible for the hit and run and subsequent assault.

Targeted Policing seized the vehicle used to commit the crime, and sought its forfeiture under the Civil Forfeiture Act. Prior to the vehicle going to public auction, a detailed search of the vehicle of the vehicle was completed which revealed an after market compartment which contained four kilograms of methamphetamine and over 100 grams of cocaine.

“This seizure is significant and we are continuing to investigate with plans to propose drug charges,” Sgt. David Evans of the Vernon Targeted Policing Unit said.

Under the provisions of the Armoured Vehicle and After Market Compartment Act having such a compartment in a vehicle is prohibited.
