VICTORIA — Provincial health officials say there has been a COVID-19 outbreak at the Tim Horton’s restaurant in Merritt.

The announcement comes as part of Friday’s regular COVID-19 update from the provincial health ministry. There is no word how many people are affected by the outbreak.

Interior Health says there is a “cluster” of cases associated with the restaurant on River Ranch Road, however it notes there was no exposure to the general public.

IH says the owner has voluntarily closed the restaurant as it investigates and completes contact tracing.

Meantime, Provinical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says the province recorded 155 new cases of the virus Friday (Oct. 16), including three new cases within Interior Health.

That brings the provincial total of COVID-19 cases in B.C. to 11,189, distributed through B.C. as follows:

  • 4,036 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 62)
  • 5,884 — Fraser Health (up by 84)
  • 240 — Island Health (up by 1)
  • 590 — Interior Health (up by 3)
  • 350 — Northern Health (up by 5)
  • 89 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry says there are 1,513 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, including 72 people in hospital and 26 in intensive care.

IH says there are 28 active cases in the region, including two people in hospital and one in intensive care.

One more person has died of the virus, bringing the provincial death toll to 251.

There are 3,713 people under active public health monitoring due to exposures to known COVID-19 cases.

A total of 9,387 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 84 per cent of all recorded cases.
