Coquihalla snow expected to taper off through Tuesday

KAMLOOPS — Snow that has blanketed the high mountain highways in the Kamloops area is tapering off Tuesday (Oct. 13).

That’s according to Environment Canada’s Doug Lundquist, who says the Coquihalla Summit could receive another 10 centimetres of snowfall before tomorrow – but there will be even less north of Merritt.

“Here on the Interior side, it’s probably warm enough now that we’re not getting much (snow) between Kamloops and about Merritt, or even through the pass all the way to Vancouver – but it’s going to cool off overnight,” Lundquist told CFJC Today. “Maybe five centimetres on this side on the high terrain, mainly over the (Okanagan) Connector.”

A snowfall warning remains in place for the Coquihalla Highway.

Lundquist notes drivers have been spoiled with good road conditions for several weeks already – and they should definitely prepare for snow-covered highways from here forward.

“You can see the white over the mountains normally around Labour Day, so this is perhaps a month we got lucky and didn’t have to deal with that,” said Lundquist. “But it’s going to be a busy pattern for the next while, so it’s really day by day, hour by hour. Check Drive BC, make sure you have your equipment and you’re prepared. You’ve got to remember how to drive in snow if you’re going to brave it.”
