KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops and Thompson Rivers University have renewed an agreement to work together in a way to benefit their respective communities.

Mayor Ken Christian and TRU President Brett Fairbairn signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Wednesday morning (Oct. 7) that replaces the previous MOU signed with former TRU President Alan Shaver two years ago.

Christian says the updated document includes some new priorities.

“One is this TRU precinct, making sure there’s active transportation routes, better accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists and a safer campus here,” Christian said. “The other one is the downtown core, a presence of the university in the downtown core like the legal clinic that’s down there now. And, on the Tranquille corridor, we see the KIC (Kamloops Innovation Centre) project and we want to see additional investment and effort into that.”

Both Christian and Fairbairn emphasized the important of a strong relationship between the city and university, especially through challenging times.

“Even during the pandemic, even with all the impacts it’s had, TRU and our faculty and our students have had record successes in research and some of that is about working on COVID-19 and its impacts in the community,” Fairbairn said. “So, the need is greater than ever and if anything is one of the reasons why this agreement is important.”
