Independent candidate wants more youth representation in Victoria

KAMLOOPS — A fourth candidate in the Kamloops-North Thompson riding has come forward to run in this month’s provincial election and he hopes to bring some youth to the local race.

Making his announcement at the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism on Tranquille Road, 19-year-old Brandon Russell says there are not enough young people represented in Victoria and he wants to change that.

Russell tried to run as a Green Party candidate but wasn’t selected and instead decided to run as an independent to get his voice out. The two biggest issues he wants to address are education and climate change.

“I attended my first climate protest at eight years old here in Kamloops, realizing that it was something that needed to take a forefront and I think it will be taking a forefront in not only this election but in the next election,” said Russell. “It’s something we need to work hard to have a collaborative solution and not just have party-bashing within each party.”

The provincial election is Saturday, Oct. 24.
