KAMLOOPS — Women going into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields will get a big boost after a generous gift from a Lillooet man.

James Bain passed away in 2019, bequeathing his entire estate to the TRU Foundation. The estate was worth about $350,000.

The TRU Foundation says Bain’s wishes were that his estate “fund bursaries for women in science.” The foundation says it has used the infusion to create an endowment that will fund 12 annual bursaries for female students in the Faculty of Science.

TRU says it had no previous indication Bain intended to leave this gift.

“This was a significant gift the TRU Foundation had not anticipated,” said TRU Foundation past president Greg Garrish in a news release. “Not only was it a surprise, but it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. If only Mr. Bain had known how profound his gesture would be. We are honoured to establish this legacy in his name.”

The school says the Bain bursaries will be awarded for the first time in 2021.
