Kamloops council gives preliminary thumbs up to tax exemption for Paramount Theatre

KAMLOOPS — A year after a big disappointment at the Kamloops council table, the sequel has gone much better for the Kamloops Film Society (KFS).

Council gave the society’s application for a permissive tax exemption for the Paramount Theatre initial approval Tuesday (Sept. 29).

In 2019, the KFS application was not approved after it missed the application deadline. KFS said it couldn’t hit the deadline because of how quickly it came after the Kelson Group purchased the theatre in order that it could be operated by the non-profit society.

Council has also grappled with applications from organizations it considers in competition with private businesses.

Councillor Mike O’Reilly, who sits on the finance committee that recommends which properties should be approved for exemptions, said this is a grey area.

“Frankly, if it’s something that council wants to change and wants to get rid of that grey area, then maybe that’s something we need to change in the future,” said O’Reilly. “But as it’s written right now, [the finance committee] believed that it fell in line and we think that it was the right application for a permissive tax exemption.”
