Suspect arrested and charged in triple fatal hit and run

KAMLOOPS — Charges have been laid against a 31-year-old Kamloops man in connection with a fatal hit and run collision last November.

In the early morning hours of November 3, 2019, RCMP responded to a crash at 1st Avenue and Battle Street. A Dodge Charger had been struck by a truck in the intersection, despite having the right of way.

The collision resulted in the deaths of three men. A fourth occupant survived the crash.

“Our investigation revealed the four men in the Charger were international students and alumni from Thompson Rivers University,” said Staff Sgt. Simon Pillay – Kamloops RCMP Plain Clothes Commander in a release. “They had spent the evening in downtown Kamloops and were responsibly using a designated driver to get themselves home safely. At the time of the collision, these men were doing exactly what they should have been doing and in no way contributed to collision.”

Kamloops RCMP found the truck was registered to 31-year-old Reid McKnight of Kamloops. He was arrested and later released as police investigated the incident.

The following day a warrant was executed at McKnight’s home where RCMP allege firearms were found and seized. This afternoon (Sept. 25), RCMP arrested McKnight, who has been charged with the following:

1. Operate a vehicle that was involved in an accident with another vehicle, and knowing that (or being reckless as to whether) that accident resulted in death, failed to stop, contrary to Section 320.16 (3) of the Criminal Code;

2. Dangerous Driving Causing Death (x3 counts) contrary to Section 320.13(3) of the Criminal Code;

3. Careless storage of a firearm, contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code;

4. Storage of firearms contrary to regulation, contrary to Section 86(2) of the Criminal Code.

McKnight is set to appear in court at a later date.
