Throne Speech

McLeod won’t support throne speech

KAMLOOPS – The Conservative M.P. for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo may not want to see a federal election this fall, but Cathy McLeod says she can’t support Wednesday’s Throne Speech.

McLeod says the proposed commitments weren’t substantive enough to require proroguing parliament.

“We didn’t need a speech from the throne to say we’re going to extend the wage subsidy or modify it,” said McLeod.

As the shadow minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, McLeod says the throne speech also didn’t address improvements she wants to see regarding missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Instead, she says it’s frustrating to hear the Liberals promise to accelerate an action plan on the matter, when they’ve already missed the deadline for their original promise. “To keep making these promises of moving things forward more quickly, when in actual fact, they haven’t delivered.”

The fate of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority government rests on the Liberals convincing at least one opposition party to vote in favour of the speech. The Tories have already said a flat no.
