Adult spelling bee kicks off Raise-a-Reader campaign

KAMLOOPS — Literacy in Kamloops is ready for another Raise-a-Reader fundraising week — with community members testing their mettle at the adult spelling bee.

10 teams of four competed for the top spot at the Delta hotel Monday morning (Sept. 14), trying to correctly spell through each round and get a passing grade from the judging panel.

Literacy in Kamloops (LinK) Outreach Coordinator Fiona Clare says the in-person event had far fewer in attendance to follow COVID-19 protocols, but the spelling bee was still a success.

“This is our Ninth Annual, and its the kick off for our Raise a Reader campaign,” she explains. “So that’s actually coming up the week of September 18, so Friday until next Friday the 25th.”

Money raised in the campaign goes towards literacy programs in the community such as the virtual parent-child Mother Goose sessions, take-home book packages for students, and the Bright Red Book Bus. Clare says they’ve made it easy to donate to the cause online, and have expanded the activities to a virtual format.

“Another option this year to support or to donate to raise a reader is we’re having a virtual trivia event. So it’s actually a provincial trivia event. You can just go online to the virtual trivia site, and the information is on the Literacy in Kamloops website. You make a team of two-to-six, you make a donation and you play virtual trivia.”

The trivia night will be held September 22 from 7:00-to-8:30 p.m. To register, go to www.literacyinkamloops.ca.
