KAMLOOPS — The recent order to close all stand-alone banquet halls will have an impact on how the Colombo Lodge can hold fundraisers.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the order on Tuesday (Sept. 8) in response to a growing number of COVID-19 cases.

The Colombo Lodge had not yet been reconfigured for smaller group sizes, but President Ross Spina says it was in the planning stages for such a change.

“We didn’t respond right away, which I think was the right thing,” Spina said. “We were hopeful that once we had 50, the number was 50 that we could serve, that we could do something differently. We were thinking about shrinking our space, offering some special dinners for 50 people and making a go of it. That way people would actually come to the hall. Based on the order, as I understand it, now that possibility is out of the question.”

The Colombo Lodge is classified as a non-profit organization, typically raising funds through weddings, corporate events and other gatherings.

Throughout the pandemic, the Colombo Lodge has been continuing its Colombo Cares Take Home Dinners.

The next of these meals is planned for September 16, and will benefit Interior Community Services.

“We are continuing now to look at are there ways that we can expand those take home options,” Spina said. “That will be in our interest, but also in the interest of the community, because ultimately it’s really important that the Colombo Lodge stays engaged with the community because they’re our biggest supporters. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the community to support us as we also believe as a non-profit organizations that one of our missions is to support our community.”
