Coldwater River basin near Merritt the driest in the province

MERRITT, B.C. — The B.C. government says the Coldwater River basin south of Merritt is experiencing extreme levels of drought.

In a news release, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resources Operations and Rural Development says the basin is at Drought Level 4, meaning it is extremely dry. It is the only region in the province at that level.

There is only one region at Drought Level 3 — eastern Vancouver Island — with most of the province experiencing normal moisture conditions.

The ministry urges residents in the Coldwater Basin area to make efforts to conserve water, saying low flows threaten ecosystems and fish.
